Chapter Twelve

THE BLACKENED SCARS of wayward bullets remained embedded in the walls, tables and chairs of the strangely quiet saloon. The deafening noise of the brief but bloody fight had long melted into the ether but there was no mistaking what had occurred in this place. The numerous bodies scattered across its floor had already started to attract flies as the blood splattered walls and pools of gore began to congeal around the dead.

The Lonesome Star saloon was now quieter than it had ever been in all of its colorful history. Now it’s only hue was a sickening shade of crimson. The twisted bodies of wanted outlaws and satin covered bargirls all lay silently in the putrid sawdust which was spread across its floorboards. The only sound now came from the desert flies feasting on their unexpected banquet.

This was a scene of death, yet two of the folks within the saloon’s four walls were anything but dead. They remained alive amid the stench of gun smoke, unlike the lifeless bodies which dominated the horrific scene.

The bartender had not moved from behind the relative safety of his long bar counter since the battle had started. Now he had summoned the courage to rise up from the place where he had been huddled.

As the terrified bartender managed to peep over the top of the bar counter, his eyes widened. The horrifying sight which greeted his eyes was something unimaginable, even to someone who had witnessed countless gun fights before.

This was different.

This was carnage.

Jed Hooper had worked in the Lonesome Star for six years but he had never seen anything remotely like this. This was in a class of its own. A reminder that even El Pecos was not immune to the ways of the Wild West.

As he managed to stand on his shaking legs he dragged the closest bottle of whiskey toward him and raised it to his lips and drank. As the rotgut liquor burned a trail down into his guts his eyes continued to study the corpses which were scattered around the saloon.

It was a chilling sight.

Each of the slain had gaping bullet holes in their bodies. Hooper had never seen anything like this and it terrified the bartender to his trembling core.

He noticed that two of his favorite bargirls were amongst the dead. They lay close to the outlaw’s lifeless bodies close to the rear door.

How could this be?

The question gnawed at his craw. Hooper remembered that the girls had been mingling with their potential clients only a few moments before the shooting had erupted.

Sweat dripped from the bartenders every pore as he vainly tried to make sense of this slaughter. Yet no matter how hard he tried, he could not understand anything as barbaric as the sight before his watery eyes.

For a brief moment in time, the world which the cowardly bartender knew had gone loco. This was the reality which most men never have the misfortune of ever experiencing.

Jed Hooper rested the bottle down amid the wet stains upon the counter and stared at the upturned card tables.
